CAMP NOAH 2007
Camp Noah is a program developed by Lutheran Disaster Response to help children who have gone through a recent disaster such as hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, earthquakes, etc. Its emphasis is on God's relationship with Noah and how it provides hope for survivors of today's disasters.
Bethel Lutheran Church organized a group of volunteers headed by Connie Jacobson to present this five-day Bible program to children in Irvington, Alabama. The group of fourteen left early Saturday, June 13th, for the 1200 plus mile trip. A fifteenth member, Gwen Johnson from Pennsylvania, joined the team in Alabama. The group of Holdrege arrived at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Mobile, Alabama, on Sunday. This church provides facilities for teams to live at during the mission workweek. Two other groups, one from Minnesota and the other from Indiana, doing reconstruction work shared the facilities with the Bethel team.
Later that evening, the Bethel group journeyed on to the Bayou le Batre Wesleyan Church at Irvington to unload and prepare classrooms for the arrival of 43 students on Monday morning. The students were survivors of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
The five days went quickly with Bible studies, crafts, skits, games, music, and meals. The activities and studies reinforce the warnings, preparedness, storms, promise, and hope of the Noah story. The week ended with a celebration with God's promise to be with us always.
This was the second year that Bethel has sent a team to this area. In 2006 many of the same people and others went to Baton Rouge, Louisiana. At this time, a third mission is being planned for August of this year to work with tornado survivors at Greensburg, Kansas.
The Camp Noah Team expresses their thanks to all persons who have contributed through prayers and financial support to these outreach missions. The spiritual growth experienced by the team members and those that attended the camps is immeasurable.
